During the International Women's Year, 1995, the limitations and obstacles in the field of women's development were identified and various measures were taken to move towards their removal. Gujarat Mahila Vikas Nigam Limited was established in March 1981 as part of this campaign.
The main objectives behind setting up this corporation are as follows
(1) To create various venues of economic activities and make the women of Gujarat earn income for their better livelihood.
(2) To plan, encourage and co-ordinate different activities in the field of economic development of women.
(3) To create awareness amongst deprived women of the state and bring them into mainstream and make they economically and socially sound so that they also may contribute to the development of the state.
Generally, Indian women are engaged in housework and activities related to the comfort and well-being of their family. The corporation plays a very important role in creating awareness among such women and engages such women in economic activities that suit them, which they can do in extra time or full time. In this direction the Corporation has prepared training modules for various occupations and large scale training activities are being conducted throughout the year throughout the State. The corporation has identified about 307 different economic activities in the manufacturing and service sectors. Women can choose any of these activities and apply for a loan under our Mahila Swavalamban Bankable Scheme, In which they get 15% with loan up to Rs.2,00,000/- or Rs.30,000/-Whichever of the two is less can get the subsidy.
In addition, the corporation organizes "exhibition-cum-sale" in and out of the state and provides opportunities for women trained by the corporation to sell their products. This activity of the corporation has provided ample opportunities to women entrepreneurs and through them they have achieved significant sales and professional reputation in the field.
In addition, the corporation also organizes programs such as "Women's Awareness Camp" to enable these women to exchange views on issues such as women's health, women's security and socio-economic development. These programs are guided by expert speakers. For the successful management of all these activities, the Corporation has field officers and staff working under the leadership of the Administrative Director, and they continue to receive guidance from the Chairperson.
Gujarat Women's Economic Development Corporation Limited is truly a "destination for women's development".
